Multilingual Spanish chartered economist, lawyer and insolvency receiver with 15 years of experience. José Carles founded Spain-based CARLES | CUESTA in 2011 after working at Garrigues and being an investment banker at UBS Investment Bank in London.

José is a Fellow of INSOL. Master in Company Law from Centro de Estudios Garrigues and Harvard Law School, BA in Law and BSc in Business Administration (ICADE).

He is a member of the Council at INSOL Europe. He also co-chairs INSOL Europe’s legal tech & digital assets wing and is joint Editor-in-Chief of INSOL Europe’s insolvency journal Eurofenix. Director of Madrid’s Bar association (ICAM) Business Recovery, Restructuring & Insolvency master program, José is also the youngest member of the advisory committee to the insolvency wing of Madrid’s Bar Association.

He has lectured at universities and international institutions worldwide and has written over 45 publications on Restructuring & Insolvency Law.

He has significant international acknowledgments such American Bankruptcy Institute 40 under 40 (2019), GRR 40 under 40 (2022) or INSOL’s Future 40 (2022). He was invited to the International Insolvency Institute’s NextGen program in 2020.

José has worked on the major files in Spain in the last 15 years such as Abengoa (€8.9 bn), Marme (€3 bn) or, recently, the prepack sale of Ingeser to Urbas group (the fastest prepack in Spain so far).
