Dr Sonali Abeyratne is INSOL's Technical Director. She has an esteemed reputation in the restructuring and insolvency industry, with over 30 years of experience in legal practice and academia.

Prior to joining INSOL in 2004, Sonali obtained her LLM from the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at The University of London, before going on to complete her doctorate from the London School of Economics and Political Science, specialising in banking and debt recovery in emerging markets. Her thesis was subsequently published as a book in 2001 and has been influential in insolvency law reform in emerging and developing markets. Sonali also spent several years working in legal, policy and knowledge roles both in Sri Lanka and in London.

In her role at INSOL, Sonali has helped to shape the strategic direction of INSOL's technical initiatives. Sonali also oversees all of INSOL's highly valued technical publications that are well known as high quality technical outputs.

In 2023, Sonali established the INSOL Future Leaders' Programme, which provides dedicated learning, networking, and practice development opportunities to INSOL's younger members. Currently 23 countries conduct the future leaders programme. The Programme has already proven to be transformative in showcasing INSOL's impact and value for its members as part of its 2030 Strategic Plan.
